Power Flows From Presence
Morning Devotional — Mark 6:47–56
Night had fallen on the Sea of Galilee. The disciples were alone in the boat, straining against the wind and the waves. The text tells us something important had just happened before this moment, Jesus had gone up on the mountain to pray.
He withdrew.
He was alone.
He practiced the rhythm that sustained His life with the Father.
And then; He came to them.
Mark tells us that in the fourth watch of the night sometime between 3:00 and 6:00 in the morning Jesus walked out across the water toward them. The disciples were exhausted, struggling against the wind, rowing but making little progress.
It is a powerful picture of life. How often do we find ourselves straining against the wind, working harder and harder, yet not moving very far?
But notice the pattern in Jesus’ life.
Before the miracle.
Before the power.
Before the breakthrough.
There was prayer.
Jesus lived within a rhythm of holy practices: withdrawal, solitude, silence, prayer, and communion with the Father. These were not interruptions to ministry , they were the source of it.
From that place of prayer He walked on the chaos.
From that place of communion He spoke peace to fear.
From that place of presence power flowed.
When He reached the shore, Mark says something remarkable: “Wherever he went into villages, towns or countryside, they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.”
The power the crowds experienced did not come from hurried activity. It came from a life rooted in the Father. This is a gentle reminder for us today. If we want the life of the Spirit. If we want our lives to carry hope, healing, and peace. Then we must also embrace the rhythm Jesus embraced.
Presence before power.
Prayer before impact.
Communion before ministry.
When we live there even the smallest touch of Christ in our lives can become healing for the world around us.
Lord Jesus, teach us your rhythm of life. Draw us into the quiet places of prayer where we learn to live with the Father. Form in us the habits of your presence so that your peace and power may flow through our lives. And when the winds rise around us, remind us that you are already coming toward us across the waters. Amen.
