How Often
Yesterday Jesus called the religious leaders “whitewashed tombs.” They looked beautiful on the outside but were full of death within. Today He reveals why those words were so strong.
Because beneath His rebuke was a broken heart. “Jerusalem, Jerusalem... how often I wanted to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing.” (Matthew 23:37)
Those may be the saddest words Jesus ever spoke. Notice what He doesn’t say. He doesn’t say,
“How often I wanted to punish you.” He doesn’t say, “How often I wanted to prove you wrong.” He says, “How often I wanted to gather you.”
That is the heart of God. From Genesis to Revelation, God is always gathering. He gathered Adam and Eve after they hid in the garden. He gathered Israel out of Egypt. He gathered exiles home from Babylon. He gathered fishermen, tax collectors, zealots, and sinners around His table. He gathers His Church. He gathers us.
Even the Cross is God’s great act of gathering a scattered humanity back to Himself. The tragedy wasn’t that God was unwilling. The tragedy was that they were. “You were not willing.” Love never forces itself upon us.
The Father opens His arms, but He does not close His hands around us. How many times has He tried to gather us? How many whispers have we ignored? How many invitations have we postponed? How many moments of grace have we rushed past because we were too busy managing our own lives?
Perhaps that’s why Jesus ends His public ministry with tears instead of triumph. The One who created the stars stands outside His own city longing for His children to come home. And isn’t that still true today? Before God asks us to do anything for Him, He simply asks us to come near.
To stop running. To stop performing. To stop pretending. To come under His wings. Religion often teaches us to work harder. Jesus invites us to come closer.
One thought that keeps lingering with me is this: Matthew 23 doesn’t end with judgment, it ends with longing. The last word before Jesus goes to the Cross is not wrath, but the aching love of a Father whose children refuse to come home.
Maybe today that’s the only invitation we need to hear. The safest place in the universe is not where everything is going well. It is beneath the wings of Christ.
Prayer
Father, thank You that Your heart has always been to gather Your children, not scatter them. Forgive me for the times I have resisted Your invitation, choosing busyness, pride, or self-reliance instead of resting in Your love. Draw me close today. Let me live beneath the shelter of Your presence and help me become someone who gathers others with the same grace You have shown me. Amen.
